Detroit Swedish Foundation
Detroit Swedish Foundation — a "new" old organization with a heart of gold
"Preserving Swedish Heritage and Culture in the Michigan Region" has been the mission for Detroit Swedish Foundation or Detroit Swedish Council—our previous name for almost half a century. We began as an organization in the Detroit region, with a focus on Swedish culture and heritage and, of course, events like Midsummer and Christmas celebrations, as well as Lucia and other similar highlights. We also support official events, for example the visit by the Swedish King and his family (but honestly, that committee has been active only once over the last 20 years.)
We have initiated numerous events, both as a single organization and together with other similar groups in the area. We have also cooperated closely with the Swedish Council of America—in fact, representatives from Detroit Swedish Council were part of the team that founded that national organization.
Other things that the Detroit Swedish Council has been involved in include creating programs like A Day with the Vikings, Swedish Art Exhibitions and Music Soiree, all in line with our mission statement.
Now to the "golden" part of the headline: Detroit Swedish Foundation today is more focused on providing financial support to other Swedish organizations that currently are in operation in Michigan. If there is a need for financial support of a program or project with ties to Sweden or Swedish culture, we can assist with a contribution. Over the last years, DSF has been able to distribute around $10,000 a year.
