Glenn T. Seaborg Award

The Glenn T. Seaborg Science Award was established in 1979 in honor of chemist and Nobel laureate Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg who discovered or co-discovered numerous atomic elements. He also provided leadership to many Swedish-American organizations and was an SCA Chairman Emeritus. The award is presented to an outstanding student selected from a list of candidates nominated by each of the six Swedish Heritage colleges. The winner receives airfare and a stipend to participate in the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar, a weeklong series of events arranged in conjunction with the Nobel festivities which take place each December.

Glenn T. Seaborg Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg was a chemist and Nobel laureate who discovered or co-discovered numerous atomic elements, including atomic element number 106, officialy named Seaborgium in his honor in 1994. Dr. Seaborg held many distinguished positions including serving as chair of the Atomic Energy Commission under President Kennedy. Dr. Seaborg was also a Chairman Emeritus of the Swedish Council of America.

The Seaborg Award is presented annually to an outstanding student selected from a list of candidates nominated by each of the six Swedish Heritage Colleges. The student must be a science or mathematics major from one of the following six schools:

  • Augustana College, Rock Island, IL
  • Bethany College, Lindsborg, KS
  • Bethel University, St. Paul, MN
  • California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, CA
  • Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN
  • North Park University, Chicago, IL
