Swedish American Museum LogoThe Swedish American Museum in Chicago’s Andersonville community is seeking a full-time curator for its permanent collection and exhibition.

 

The curator is responsible for all aspects of collections management. Key activities include:

  • Cataloging, documenting, preserving, storing, and securing the collection.
  • Managing acquisitions, accessioning, including inventory and photography.
  • Training and managing docents, interns, volunteers, and working collaboratively with the Museum’s Collections Committee.
  •  Assisting with pursuing grants and other funding for the management, and care of the collection.
  • Planning, updating, and carrying out the Museum’s permanent exhibit, together with the Exhibit Committee.
  • Writing articles and presenting forums about the Museum’s collections.
  • Working within the professional museum environment to further the Swedish American Museum’s mission.

The preferred candidate has an advanced degree in history, museum studies, art conservation, or a related field with three to five years of museum or equivalent curatorial experience. Qualifications include strong written and oral communication skills, along with research, presentation, organization, and interpersonal skills. Candidate should have the ability to work independently and as part of a team to serve the needs of the public, members, donors, and co-workers. Familiarity with Swedish history, culture, and language is beneficial.

Salary will be based on applicant’s experience and qualifications. Some evening and weekend work required.
